About Gary Sutherland

Splitting 1971 between second base (56 games) and shortstop (46), Sutherland hit .257 for the Expos. His #211, a second-series card, pictures him with Montreal. In June 1972 the Expos traded him to Houston, where he played five games; most of that season went to Oklahoma City (79 games) and Peninsula (53).

Gary Sutherland, nicknamed "Sudsy," was a middle infielder who played 13 major league seasons from 1966 to 1978 with the Phillies, Expos, Astros, Tigers, Brewers, Padres and Cardinals. A USC Trojan under coach Rod Dedeaux, he signed with Philadelphia as an amateur free agent in 1964 and reached the majors in 1966. Sutherland split time between shortstop, second base and the outfield early in his career before settling in as a regular second baseman, leading National League second basemen with 110 double plays turned in 1969, the Montreal Expos' inaugural season. As the Expos' first-ever starting second baseman, he scored the franchise's first run and recorded the first putout in a regular-season major league game played in Canada. He played for Detroit from 1974 to 1976 and started at second base for the Tigers in 1974 and 1975. Over his career he hit .243 with 754 hits in 1,031 games. After retiring he stayed in baseball as a scout and administrator, serving as special assistant to the general manager of the Los Angeles Angels from 1999 to 2011.
