About this card

About Gene Mauch
Mauch's fourth season in Montreal ended with a 70-86 record in 1972, fifth in the National League East. Topps issued his Expos manager card as third-series #276. On October 2, 1972, Bill Stoneman pitched a no-hitter against the Mets in the first game of a doubleheader at Jarry Park.
Gene Mauch signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1943 and reached the majors the following spring at 18. Army Air Forces service interrupted his playing career, which eventually spanned nine major league seasons and six clubs. He batted .239 in 304 games. As player-manager of the Atlanta Crackers in 1953, he led the club to third place, then resigned because he felt unready for the job. He later managed the Minneapolis Millers to the 1958 Junior World Series title. In the majors he managed Philadelphia, Montreal, Minnesota and California over 26 seasons, winning 1,902 games. His approach emphasized bunting, advancing runners, speed and defense. Mauch retired during spring training in 1988 and returned as the Royals' bench coach in 1995.
