1972 Topps #234 Ron Taylor

About Ron Taylor
Topps #234 identifies Taylor with Montreal in the second series, but he never pitched for the Expos. Released on April 20, he signed with San Diego that day and made four appearances totaling five innings. His final major-league game came at Montreal's Jarry Park on May 14. Visits to military hospitals on goodwill tours had prompted his interest in medicine; he entered the University of Toronto's medical school in 1973.
Toronto-born right-hander Ron Taylor pitched for Cleveland, St. Louis, Houston, the Mets and San Diego during eleven major-league seasons from 1962 through 1972. He finished 45-43 with a 3.93 ERA and 72 saves. He struck out 464 batters in 800 innings. Of his 491 appearances, 474 came in relief. Taylor won championships with the 1964 Cardinals and 1969 Mets and allowed no hits in seven World Series innings. He combined baseball with two professions. While pitching in Cleveland's farm system, he earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Toronto in 1961. After leaving baseball, he returned to the university for medical school, graduating in 1977. He became the Blue Jays' team physician in 1979 and served for more than three decades. The Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame inducted him in 1985, followed by Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1993. Taylor died in Toronto on June 16, 2025, at 87.
