1972 Topps #236 Jim McGlothlin

About Jim McGlothlin
Sparky Anderson talked late in 1971 of moving McGlothlin to the bullpen, and in spring training 1972 McGlothlin said he might ask to be traded rather than accept long relief. He stayed, started 21 games and went 9-8 with a 3.91 ERA for the pennant winners. On October 20 he started World Series Game 5 at Oakland and gave up a three-run homer to Gene Tenace in the second inning. This is card #236 from the second series, with the Reds.
Jim McGlothlin was a right-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors, five with the California Angels and four with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago White Sox. Born in Los Angeles, he signed with the Angels out of Reseda High School and worked his way up through the minors, debuting in September 1965. He made the American League All-Star team in 1967, tying for the league lead with six shutouts and posting a career-best 2.96 ERA. Traded to Cincinnati after the 1969 season, he won a career-high 14 games for the pennant-winning 1970 Big Red Machine and started a game in that year's World Series. He also pitched for Cincinnati's 1972 National League champions, starting a World Series game against Oakland. He finished his career 67-77 with a 3.61 ERA over 256 games. McGlothlin died of leukemia in 1975 at age 32.
