About Ross Grimsley

Grimsley reached Cincinnati in May 1971 at age 21, lost his debut 9-3 to the Expos at Riverfront Stadium after 1 2/3 innings, and still finished with 26 starts, a 10-7 record and a 3.57 ERA. Card #99 in the first series of the 1972 set is his rookie card and carries the Topps All-Star Rookie trophy cup. It shows him with the Reds.

Ross Grimsley was a left-handed starter who pitched 11 major league seasons for the Cincinnati Reds (1971-73), Baltimore Orioles (1974-77 and 1982), Montreal Expos (1978-80) and Cleveland Indians (1980). The Reds took him in the first round of the 1969 January secondary draft, and his father, Ross Sr., had pitched for the 1951 White Sox. He won 124 games with a 3.81 ERA. He went 18-13 with 17 complete games for the 1974 Orioles and 20-11 with 19 complete games for the 1978 Expos, a season that brought his only All-Star selection and a seventh-place Cy Young finish. He made 28 starts for the National League champion Reds in 1972. He was one of the more colorful players of the 1970s, with long hair, a reputation for skipping showers during winning streaks and turquoise contact lenses. After playing he worked as a minor league instructor for several organizations, as a pitching coach in the Giants system and with Double-A Richmond, and as a co-host of Orioles pregame radio coverage in Baltimore.
