1972 Topps #80 Tony Perez

About Tony Perez
Perez returned to first base after Cincinnati traded Lee May, playing all 136 of his games there in 1972. He batted .283 with 21 home runs and 90 RBI. In the World Series against Oakland he went 10-for-23. That November a 20-day visa allowed him to visit his family in Cuba for the first time since 1963. His first-series Topps card is #80.
Tony Perez grew up in Cuba's Camaguey province, working beside his father in a sugar mill and playing shortstop for the factory team. Cincinnati signed him in 1960 for a plane ticket and the $2.50 cost of an exit visa. Minnie Minoso was his boyhood idol. His American career began with Geneva in the New York-Pennsylvania League. Perez spent 23 seasons in the majors, playing first and third base and collecting 2,732 hits, 379 home runs and 1,652 RBI. A seven-time All-Star, he played for Cincinnati, Montreal, Boston and Philadelphia before returning to the Reds for his final three seasons, ending in 1986. He met his wife, Pituka, while playing winter baseball in Puerto Rico. Their son Eduardo also became a major-league player. Perez coached Cincinnati for six seasons before managing the Reds in 1993; he later managed the Florida Marlins in 2001. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2000.
