1972 Topps #669 Willie Crawford

About Willie Crawford
The 1972 Dodgers used Crawford in 96 games, 74 of them in the outfield. He hit .251 with 8 home runs and 27 RBI in 243 at-bats, and in 1973 he played 145 games. Topps placed his Los Angeles card, #669, in the sixth series.
Willie Murphy Crawford was a left-handed outfielder from Los Angeles who starred at Fremont High School in both football and baseball before Al Campanis signed him to the Dodgers for $100,000 in 1964. The bonus rule of the era kept him on the big-league roster right away, and he spent fourteen seasons in the majors, most of them with Los Angeles. Playing shallow in the outfield to cut off short fly balls, he relied on a strong arm to cut down baserunners and a good jump to run down balls hit over his head. His best years came in the early 1970s, peaking at .295 with 14 home runs and 66 RBI in 1973. He later played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Houston Astros and Oakland Athletics before retiring after the 1977 season with a .268 career average, 86 home runs and 419 RBI over 1,210 games. He died in Los Angeles in 2004 at age 57.
