About Brewers Field Leaders (Del Crandall / Harvey Kuenn / Joe Nossek / Bob Shaw / Jim Walton)

A 1970 Texas League championship with Albuquerque preceded Crandall's move to Milwaukee's Triple-A affiliate in Evansville in 1971 and the Brewers' managing job in 1972. His 1973 Topps #646 grouped him with coaches Harvey Kuenn, Joe Nossek, Bob Shaw and Jim Walton. The manager-and-coaches card was a high number from the fifth series. Del Crandall spent eight seasons as the Milwaukee Braves' regular catcher, an eight-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner whose arm and game-calling made him the National League's premier defensive backstop of the 1950s.

On September 17, 1971, Kuenn left Milwaukee to help coach the Brewers' Instructional League team in Arizona. He continued as the Brewers' batting coach in 1972. Topps included him on #646 in 1973's fifth series, a high number, with manager Del Crandall and coaches Joe Nossek, Bob Shaw and Jim Walton. Harvey Kuenn won the 1953 AL Rookie of the Year Award and the 1959 AL batting title as a Detroit Tigers infielder-outfielder, hit .303 over 15 seasons and later managed Milwaukee's 1982 pennant-winning Harvey's Wallbangers.

The Brewers bought Joe Nossek in February 1971, and he spent that season at Triple-A Evansville, batting .223 in 174 at-bats while helping manager Del Crandall. Crandall took over Milwaukee in 1973 and made Nossek his third-base coach. Topps ran the Brewers staff as #646, a fifth-series high number shared with Crandall, Harvey Kuenn, Bob Shaw and Jim Walton. A defense-first Twins and A's outfielder of the mid-1960s who started in center for most of Minnesota's 1965 World Series before a long career as a coach.

Card #646 is the Milwaukee Brewers managers-and-coaches card, a fifth-series high number shared by Del Crandall, Harvey Kuenn, Joe Nossek, Bob Shaw and Jim Walton. Shaw, who last pitched in the majors in 1967, was hired as Crandall's pitching coach on September 15, 1972. He resigned on July 15, 1973, after a dispute with general manager Jim Wilson. Bob Shaw was a right-hander who won 18 games and beat Sandy Koufax 1-0 in the 1959 World Series for the pennant-winning White Sox, later making the 1962 All-Star team with Milwaukee and setting the major-league record for balks in a game.

After serving as interim manager of Double-A San Antonio in 1972, Walton joined Del Crandall's Milwaukee staff as first-base coach for 1973. His fifth-series high-number card, Topps #646, paired him with Crandall and fellow Brewers coaches Harvey Kuenn, Joe Nossek and Bob Shaw. Jim Walton combined major league coaching with scouting and player instruction. In Shattuck, Oklahoma, he helped create an indoor practice facility, while his advance scouting examined opponents' tendencies and defensive alignments.
