1973 Topps #647 George Stone

About George Stone
Stone's 1972 ended at 6-11 with a 5.51 ERA in 111 innings, after he gave up 18 runs in 15 2/3 September innings. The Braves owned the majors' worst staff ERA, 4.27, and sent him and Felix Millan to the Mets for Gary Gentry and Danny Frisella. Card #647, a fifth-series high number, pictures him with New York.
George Stone was a left-handed pitcher who spent nine seasons in the majors with the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets. A Louisiana Tech product signed by the Braves in 1966, he reached Atlanta as a September call-up in 1967 and became a rookie regular in 1968, working his way into the starting rotation. In 1969 he went 13-10 with a 3.65 ERA and helped the Braves win the National League West before the club fell to the Mets in the NLCS. His success stemmed from two different change-ups and a slider taught to him by Braves general manager Paul Richards. Joining the Mets in 1973, he had his finest year, going 12-3 with a 2.80 ERA to lead the National League in winning percentage. Arm trouble limited him in 1974 and 1975, his final season. He finished with a 60-57 career record, a 3.89 ERA and 590 strikeouts.
