About Tom Egan
Egan's 1972 season with the Chicago White Sox covered 46 games at catcher and a .191 average. He drove in 9 runs, and his two home runs came on June 28 against Oakland and October 3 at Minnesota. His 1973 Topps #648 is a high number from the fifth series and lists him with the White Sox.
Thomas Patrick Egan was a 6-foot-4 catcher out of El Rancho High School in Pico Rivera, California, who signed with the Angels for a $100,000 bonus in 1964. He was 18 when he debuted on May 27, 1965, striking out against Ron Kline to end a loss in Washington. Egan caught for the California Angels (1965-1970, 1974-1975) and the Chicago White Sox (1971-1972): 373 games over ten major league seasons, a .200 average with 22 home runs and 91 RBI. A November 1970 trade sent him to Chicago with Jay Johnstone and Tom Bradley, and 1971 became his fullest year: 85 games, 10 homers, 34 RBI. California reclaimed him in the December 1973 Rule 5 draft, and on September 28, 1974 he caught Nolan Ryan's third no-hitter, a 15-strikeout game against Minnesota that ended with Ryan walking Harmon Killebrew and fanning Eric Soderholm. Egan played his last game on June 15, 1975 and was released by the Angels that year.
