About Doyle Alexander

Alexander moved into the Orioles rotation in 1973 and went 12-8 with a 3.86 ERA over 26 starts, completing 10 of them in 174 2/3 innings. It was his first winning season. He also pitched in the ALCS, taking the loss as Oakland beat Baltimore three games to two. Card #109 shows him with the Orioles.

Doyle Alexander was born September 4, 1950, in Cordova, Alabama, attended Woodlawn High School in Birmingham and Jefferson College in Missouri, and was drafted by the Dodgers in the ninth round in 1968. He debuted with Los Angeles in 1971 and that December went to Baltimore in the trade that sent Frank Robinson to the Dodgers. Baltimore traded him to the Yankees on June 15, 1976, and he started Game 1 of that year's World Series. He then pitched for Texas, Atlanta, San Francisco, the Yankees again and Toronto, where he won 17 games in both 1984 and 1985. In 1987 Atlanta sent him to Detroit for minor leaguer John Smoltz, and he went 9-0 with a 1.53 ERA for the Tigers. He made his only All-Star team in 1988 and retired after 1989 with a 194-174 record and a 3.76 ERA.
