About Mark Belanger

Belanger scored 36 runs and stole six bases for Baltimore in 1972. In 1973 he batted .226 with 27 RBI and finished 21st in the American League MVP voting. His Orioles card, #253, belongs to the second series of the 1973 Topps set.

Mark Belanger spent 17 seasons with Baltimore and one with the Los Angeles Dodgers, winning eight Gold Gloves at shortstop and a World Series championship with the 1970 Orioles. His tall, narrow frame earned him the nickname The Blade. Baltimore signed him out of Pittsfield High School in 1962 for $35,000, and he reached the majors as a pinch-runner on August 7, 1965. Across 18 seasons he collected 1,316 hits and batted .228. He served as the Orioles' player representative, took part in the 1981 strike negotiations and worked for the players' association after retiring. Baltimore inducted him into its team Hall of Fame in 1983.
