1973 Topps #254 Bill Stoneman

About Bill Stoneman
Stoneman made the only Opening Day start of his career on April 15, 1972, against Bob Gibson and the Cardinals. He became the first Expo besides Rusty Staub on the National League All-Star team, retiring Dick Allen, Carl Yastrzemski and Bobby Grich in the seventh before Cookie Rojas homered in the eighth. He finished 12-14 with 13 complete games and four shutouts. Card #254 comes from the second series and lists him with Montreal.
William Hambly Stoneman III pitched eight major league seasons (1967-1974) for the Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos and California Angels. He threw a sharp curveball, and his Cubs teammates called him "Toy Tiger" for his tenacity and slight 5-foot-10 frame. After debuting with Chicago, Stoneman became a starter for the expansion Montreal Expos and threw two no-hitters. The first came on April 17, 1969, against the Philadelphia Phillies, in the franchise's ninth game. The second, on October 2, 1972, against the New York Mets, was the first major league no-hitter thrown in Canada. From 1969 to 1972 he logged four straight 200-plus-inning seasons for Montreal, and an arm injury in 1973 shortened his career. He finished 54-85 with a 4.08 ERA and 934 strikeouts, then spent decades in baseball front offices, building the 2002 World Series champion Anaheim Angels as general manager. He was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2026.
