About Expos Field Leaders (Gene Mauch / Dave Bristol / Larry Doby / Cal McLish / Jerry Zimmerman)

The Expos manager card in 1973 Topps, third-series #377, grouped Mauch with Dave Bristol, Larry Doby, Cal McLish and Jerry Zimmerman. In 1973 Mauch's Expos went 79-83 and finished fourth in the National League East, 3 1/2 games behind the Mets. Gene Mauch played for six major league clubs before managing the Phillies, Expos, Twins and Angels over 26 seasons. His teams emphasized bunting, advancing runners, speed and defense, and he finished with 1,902 managerial wins.

Bristol joined the Expos staff for 1973 with a managerial record of 298-265 over four seasons with Cincinnati and 144-209 over three with Milwaukee. His card, #377 from print series 3, is an Expos manager card shared with Gene Mauch, Larry Doby, Cal McLish and Jerry Zimmerman. A minor league infielder who became a playing manager at age 24, Bristol managed the Cincinnati Reds from mid-1966 through 1969, the seasons just before the club became the Big Red Machine.

Montreal hired Doby as a scout in 1969 and made him a minor-league instructor in 1970. From 1971 through 1973 he was Gene Mauch's batting coach with the Expos. Card #377 is the club's manager-and-coaches card, which he shares with Mauch, Dave Bristol, Cal McLish and Jerry Zimmerman. Center fielder who became the American League's first Black player when he debuted for Cleveland on July 5, 1947. A seven-time All-Star who hit 253 home runs, he was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1998.

Cal McLish had been the Montreal Expos pitching coach since the club's 1969 debut, working under Gene Mauch with Bill Stoneman, Carl Morton, Steve Renko and Ernie McAnally. Topps gave the staff #377 in the third series, a managers and coaches card that also lists Dave Bristol, Larry Doby and Jerry Zimmerman. In 1973 bronchial pneumonia led team doctors to send McLish home to recuperate. Cal McLish pitched 15 major-league seasons for seven clubs, won 19 games for Cleveland in 1959 and saved that summer's second All-Star Game, then coached big-league pitchers from 1965 to 1982.

Before his Montreal coaching job, Zimmerman had planned to manage the Seattle Pilots' new farm club in Billings, Montana. He was still on the Expos' staff in 1972. Montreal's 1973 Topps manager-and-coaches card, #377, included him in the third series. Jerry Zimmerman was a sure-handed catcher who played eight big-league seasons for Cincinnati and Minnesota from 1961 to 1968, then spent a dozen years on Gene Mauch's coaching staffs and umpired an inning of a 1978 major league game.
