1973 Topps #376 Frank Duffy

About Frank Duffy
Duffy had the best offensive year of his career in 1973, setting career highs with a .263 average, 8 home runs and 50 RBI. His glove drew the notice, too: eight errors in 115 games at shortstop gave him a .986 fielding percentage, best in the American League. Buddy Bell took over at third base after Graig Nettles was traded to the Yankees, and the pair formed the left side of the infield.
Frank Duffy was a glove-first shortstop who played ten seasons in the majors, 1970 through 1979, for the Reds, Giants, Indians and Red Sox. A three-sport athlete at Turlock High School, he graduated from Stanford with a psychology degree, was named a Sporting News All-American in 1967, and was the sixth pick of that year's draft by Cincinnati. Reds manager Sparky Anderson preferred Dave Concepcion at short, and Duffy was moved twice in a single year, first to San Francisco and then to Cleveland. He started at shortstop for the Indians for six seasons and placed near the top of the league's shortstops in fielding percentage in each of his first five years there. He closed his career with the Red Sox in 1978 and 1979, and finished with a .232 average and 26 home runs in 915 games.
