1973 Topps #255 Reggie Jackson

About Reggie Jackson
Jackson showed up at 1972 spring training with a mustache and refused to shave it. Charlie Finley liked it enough to offer each player $300 to grow one and to host a Mustache Day with Frenchy Bordagaray as master of ceremonies. Jackson played 135 games that year and drove in 75 runs. Card #255 is a second-series issue with the Athletics.
Reggie Jackson was a left-handed-hitting outfielder and designated hitter who played 21 major-league seasons. A 14-time All-Star, he batted .262 with 2,584 hits. He hit 563 home runs and drove in 1,702 runs, and his 2,597 strikeouts set the major-league career record for a batter. Kansas City selected him second overall from Arizona State in the 1966 draft; he debuted in 1967 and moved with the Athletics to Oakland the next year. He was a member of Oakland's 1972-74 World Series championship clubs and the Yankees' 1977-78 champions. In 1973 he led the American League with 32 home runs and 117 RBI, winning its MVP award unanimously and the World Series MVP award. Known as 'Mr. October,' he also played for Baltimore and California before returning to Oakland for his final season in 1987. He entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1993 on his first ballot.
