1973 Topps #628 Jim Slaton

About Jim Slaton
A car accident in Puerto Rico chipped a bone in Slaton's right wrist before the season, but he returned in early April with four shutout innings against the Angels. He then made 38 starts and went 13-15 with a 3.71 ERA. Card #628, a fifth-series high number, pictures him with the Brewers.
Jim Slaton was a right-handed pitcher who worked 16 seasons, 1971 to 1986, mostly for the Milwaukee Brewers, with the Tigers and Angels in between and at the end. A Long Beach native who attended Antelope Valley High School in Lancaster, he moved on to Antelope Valley College, and the Seattle Pilots took him in the 15th round, 357th overall. Milwaukee put him on its 1971 opening roster at age 20 without a pitch thrown above Class A, and Frank Lane, a former Brewers general manager, said he reminded him of Tom Seaver in the way he worked. He finished 151-158 with a 4.03 ERA and 1,191 strikeouts. His Brewers totals of 2,025 1/3 innings and 268 starts are franchise records. In 1982 he moved to the bullpen and saved six games. After retiring he coached in the minors, including the Tacoma Rainiers from 1999 to 2003, and served as Seattle's bullpen coach from 2005 to 2007.
