About Ken McMullen

McMullen played the 1973 opener at third base for the Dodgers, then lost the job to rookie Ron Cey and worked mostly as a pinch hitter, going 6-for-19 with two home runs and nine RBIs in that role. Before the season his wife, Bobbie, was diagnosed with breast cancer while three months pregnant. She insisted he keep playing, put off treatment until their son Jonathan was born in November 1973, and died on April 6, 1974. Topps #196, a second-series card, lists him with Los Angeles.

Ken McMullen played 16 major league seasons as a right-handed-hitting third baseman for the Dodgers, Senators, Angels, Athletics and Brewers. At Oxnard High School he earned first-team All-CIF Southern Section honors as an outfielder in the AAA Division in 1960. The Dodgers signed him after graduation, and he reached the majors in September 1962 at age 20. He appeared in 1,583 major league games. He finished with 1,273 hits, 156 home runs and 606 RBI. His final major league at-bat, for Milwaukee on September 14, 1977, was a pinch-hit home run off Seattle's Tom House.
