1973 Topps #442 Dick Dietz

About Dick Dietz
Dietz was the Giants' player representative during the 1972 strike, and soon after it ended the Los Angeles Dodgers claimed him off waivers. He broke his wrist on July 30 and hit .161 in 27 games. His 1973 Topps #442, from the fourth series, shows him with the Dodgers. He then batted .295 for Atlanta in 1973, mostly at first base and catcher, and his final game came on September 30 of that year.
Richard Allen Dietz was a catcher who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors, 1966 to 1973, mostly with the San Francisco Giants. Signed as an amateur free agent out of South Carolina before the 1960 season, he broke in with the Giants in June 1966 and worked his way from backup duty behind Tom Haller into the regular catching job by 1970. That year he set career highs across the board, batting .300 with 22 home runs and 107 runs batted in, and he made the National League All-Star team, leading off the ninth inning of that year's game with a home run off Catfish Hunter that helped spark a rally that tied it. He caught every game down the stretch of the 1971 division race. He closed out his career with the Dodgers in 1972 and the Braves in 1973. He retired with a .261 career average and later managed in the minor leagues.
