1973 Topps #443 Danny Thompson

About Danny Thompson
The routine physical that led to Thompson's leukemia diagnosis came the day before his 26th birthday. He still played 99 games that season, 95 of them at shortstop, and hit .225. He had one home run and 36 RBI. Card #443 comes from the fourth series of the 1973 Topps set and carries the Twins as his team.
Danny Thompson was a Minnesota Twins infielder from 1970 to 1976 who became the club's regular shortstop in 1972 and finished his career with the Texas Rangers. Born in Wichita, Kansas, he grew up in Capron, Oklahoma, and was an All-American at Oklahoma State before the Twins made him their first pick in the secondary phase of the 1968 draft. He hit .276 with 158 hits in 1972. In early 1973 he was diagnosed with granulocytic leukemia, and he kept playing for four more seasons. He received the Hutch Award in Seattle after 1974. On June 1, 1976, the Twins sent him and Bert Blyleven to Texas for Roy Smalley III, Mike Cubbage, Bill Singer and Jim Gideon. His last game came on October 2, 1976, as a pinch hitter. He died on December 10, 1976, in Rochester, Minnesota, at 29. In 1977 the Rangers wore a black armband with his number 4, and the memorial golf tournament begun that year by Harmon Killebrew has raised more than $15 million for leukemia and cancer research.
