1973 Topps #98 Dick Woodson

About Dick Woodson
Woodson started 23 games in 1973 and went 10-8 with a 3.95 ERA, though an injury kept him out for all of September. He had four complete games and two shutouts in 141 1/3 innings. His 1973 Topps #98, from the first series, shows him with the Twins.
Dick Woodson was a 6-foot-5 right-hander who pitched for the Minnesota Twins in 1969, 1970 and 1972 through 1974, and for the New York Yankees in 1974. The Twins signed him as an amateur free agent before the 1965 season and he made the club out of spring training in 1969. He debuted on April 8 that year, relieving Joe Grzenda in the 12th inning at Kansas City and allowing one hit in a 4-3 loss. He pitched in the American League Championship Series in both 1969 and 1970, each a three-game sweep by Baltimore. In February 1974 he became the first player to use the new free agency clause, asking $30,000 against the Twins' $23,000, and the arbitrator sided with him. Minnesota traded him to the Yankees on May 4, 1974 for Mike Pazik, and he pitched his last major league game on July 8. He finished 34-32 with a 3.47 ERA in 137 games.
