About Dave Goltz

Goltz was called up in July 1972 when Jim Kaat went on the disabled list with a broken bone in his left hand, and he debuted on July 18 with 3 2/3 scoreless innings of relief at Yankee Stadium. He won his first start four days later against the Brewers and finished 3-3 with a 2.67 ERA in 15 games. This rookie card, #148, follows that half-season and shows him with the Twins.

Dave Goltz was a 6-foot-4 right-handed starter who spent eight seasons with the Minnesota Twins, from 1972 to 1979, before finishing with the Los Angeles Dodgers and California Angels. Born in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, he lettered in four sports at Rothsay High School, signed with the Twins out of high school, and lost the 1969 season to active duty as an Army Reserve helicopter mechanic. In 1977 he went 20-11 with a 3.36 ERA over 303 innings and tied Dennis Leonard and Jim Palmer for the American League lead in wins. Years of throwing a knuckle curve left him unable to straighten the fingers of his right hand. He signed a six-year, $3 million deal with the Dodgers after the 1979 season and pitched in the 1981 World Series, which Los Angeles won over the Yankees. He also appeared for the Angels against the Brewers in the 1982 American League playoffs and finished his career 113-109 with a 3.69 ERA. The Angels released him in 1983 with a torn rotator cuff.
