1973 Topps #284 Glenn Borgmann

About Glenn Borgmann
Borgmann's 1972 had been his first big-league summer: 56 games, a .234 average and three home runs as the Twins' catcher. He then spent most of 1973 in the minors and appeared in 12 games for Minnesota. His 1973 Topps card, #284 from the third series, is his rookie card and shows him with the Twins.
Glenn Borgmann was a right-handed catcher who played eight of his nine major league seasons with the Minnesota Twins, 1972 through 1979, and finished with the Chicago White Sox in 1980. The Twins took him out of the University of South Alabama, where he was the school's first All-American, in the first round of the secondary phase of the 1971 draft. He debuted on July 1, 1972, and took over as starting catcher in the second half of that year, replacing the platoon of Phil Roof and George Mitterwald. In 1974 he caught 128 games, batted .252 and led American League catchers with a .997 fielding percentage. He hit .207 in 1975, lost the job to rookie Butch Wynegar in 1976 and backed him up for four seasons. For his career he batted .229 with 16 home runs and 151 RBI in 474 games. After signing with Chicago for 1980 he played 32 games, then closed his career in 1981 with 11 games for Cleveland's Triple-A club in Charleston.
