1973 Topps #428 Wayne Simpson

About Wayne Simpson
Cincinnati traded Simpson and Hal McRae to Kansas City for Roger Nelson and Richie Scheinblum that winter, a move Simpson had requested. The Royals sent him to Triple-A Omaha in late June, and he finished the year 3-4 with a 5.73 ERA in 16 games, ten of them starts. Card #428, from the fourth series, lists him with Kansas City.
Wayne Simpson was a big right-handed power pitcher from Los Angeles, listed at 6 feet 3 inches and 220 pounds, whom the Cincinnati Reds took eighth overall in the 1967 draft out of Centennial High School in Compton. Wildness slowed him in the minors, where he walked 298 batters in three seasons, until a winter in the Puerto Rican league settled his control. He pitched for the Reds from 1970 to 1972, the Kansas City Royals in 1973, the Philadelphia Phillies in 1975 and the California Angels in 1977, finishing 36-31 with a 4.37 ERA. He tore his rotator cuff on July 31, 1970, several years before the early examples of rotator cuff surgery, and the injury took away his velocity. Hank Aaron collected his 3,000th career hit off him. Simpson finished his career in Mexico, where thoracic outlet syndrome threatened his pitching arm. He died in December 2024 at age 76.
