About Bill Campbell

Campbell's card #26 in the 1974 set shows him with the Twins and is his rookie card. It follows his July 14, 1973 debut, a scoreless ninth in relief of Jim Kaat against Cleveland, and a 3-3 rookie year with 7 saves in 28 games. The 1974 season brought 63 appearances, all in relief, an 8-7 record and 19 saves.

Bill Campbell was a right-handed reliever who pitched 15 big-league seasons, 1973 to 1987, for the Twins, Red Sox, Cubs, Phillies, Cardinals, Tigers and Expos. He worked his way up as a starter with a fastball and screwball; after a 10-5 start at Triple-A Tacoma in 1973 he was called up, and manager Frank Quilici converted him to relief. His peak was 1976 and 1977, when he won both the Rolaids Relief Man Award and The Sporting News Fireman of the Year each season. He was the first American League winner of the Rolaids award and its first two-time winner. After 1976 he was among the first players to test free agency and signed a five-year, $1 million contract with Boston. Arm trouble cut into his work from 1978 on, though he kept pitching in relief for Chicago, Philadelphia and St. Louis and appeared in the 1985 NLCS and World Series with the Cardinals. He finished 83-68 with a 3.54 ERA and 126 saves. A Highland Park, Michigan native raised in Pomona, California, he served in the Army in Vietnam before signing with the Twins in 1971. He died on January 6, 2023.
