1974 Topps #109 Bob Grich

About Bob Grich
Baltimore traded Davey Johnson after 1972, and in 1973 Grich played all 162 games at second base and won his first Gold Glove. Settled at one position for the first time, he set out to perfect four or five kinds of pivots, crossing the bag with either foot or using the jump throw. He hit .251 with 17 stolen bases, then went 2-for-20 in the ALCS loss to Oakland. His #109 shows him with the Orioles.
Bobby Grich was a second baseman who spent seven seasons with the Baltimore Orioles (1970-1976) and ten with the California Angels (1977-1986). He won four consecutive Gold Gloves from 1973 through 1976 and was a six-time All-Star. In 1973 he set the major league single-season fielding record for second basemen at .995, then raised it to .997 in 1985. His bat carried power as well: he hit 30 home runs with 101 RBI in 1979 and shared the American League home run lead with 22 in the strike-shortened 1981 season, when he also won a Silver Slugger. He finished with 224 home runs, 1,833 hits and a .266 average in 2,008 games. A first-round pick of the Orioles in 1967 out of Long Beach, he played in five League Championship Series, three with the Angels, and retired after the 1986 ALCS loss to Boston. He drew 11 votes in his one year on the Hall of Fame ballot in 1992. The Angels made him the first member of their Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Orioles inducted him in 1998.
