1974 Topps #222 Ramon Hernandez

About Ramon Hernandez
Hernandez struck out 64 batters in 89 2/3 innings for the 1973 Pirates, both career highs, and posted a 2.41 ERA. He pitched that year without Roberto Clemente, his teammate and biggest advocate, who had died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972. His 1974 Topps card is #222, with the Pirates. In 1974 he went 5-2 and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings in two NLCS games, which the Dodgers won in four.
Ramon Hernandez was a switch-hitting, left-handed relief pitcher from Carolina, Puerto Rico. Signed by Pittsburgh in 1959, he spent years in the minors and winter ball before reaching the majors with Atlanta in 1967 at age 26. After a brief stop with the Cubs, the Pirates reacquired him in 1971, and he pitched out of their bullpen through the mid-1970s, pairing a sidearm delivery and a screwball with sharp control against left-handed hitters. His best season came in 1972, when he went 5-0 with a 1.67 ERA and 14 saves. He pitched in three National League Championship Series with Pittsburgh, in 1972, 1974 and 1975. A teammate and an opposing manager credited his deceptive, multi-angle motion for his effectiveness. He also played 21 winter-league seasons in Puerto Rico. Hernandez finished his nine-season career 23-15 with a 3.03 ERA. He saved 46 games in 337 appearances.
