About this card

Cards #201-208 are the League Leaders subset: the 1973 leaders in batting, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, victories, earned run average and strikeouts, and the leading firemen (#208), each card pairing the American League leader with the National League leader.

The story on this card

Home runs in 1973 belonged to Oakland's Reggie Jackson in the American League and Pittsburgh's Willie Stargell in the National. Jackson led the AL with 32 for an Oakland team that won the pennant and beat the Mets in a seven-game World Series. Stargell hit 44 to edge three Atlanta Braves. Davey Johnson hit 43, Darrell Evans 41 and Hank Aaron 40, and Stargell also led the NL in doubles. Both men appear on #202 in the 1974 Topps League Leaders group, Jackson printed with the Athletics and Stargell with the Pirates.

Oakland outfielder Reggie Jackson attended Arizona State on a football scholarship. He played summer baseball for Walter Youse's amateur team in Baltimore before taking over Arizona State's center-field job from Rick Monday. Willie Stargell was Pittsburgh's power-hitting left fielder and first baseman, a seven-time All-Star known as "Pops" who won two World Series with the Pirates and, at age 39, took the 1979 National League MVP, NLCS MVP and World Series MVP awards.
