1974 Topps #141 Pat Bourque

About Pat Bourque
Bourque began 1974 on Oakland's roster, working mostly as a pinch-hitter through April and May with a .286 average and seven RBIs. The Athletics sent him to Triple-A Wichita on June 2, to the surprise of his teammates, and brought him back on June 15. On August 19 they traded him to the Twins for Jim Holt, and after the season Oakland reacquired him for Dan Ford and pitcher Dan Myers. His 1974 card, #141, is printed with the Oakland Athletics.
Pat Bourque was a left-handed first baseman who played for the Cubs, Athletics and Twins from 1971 to 1974, hitting 12 home runs in 201 games. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he played baseball and football at Holy Cross, and the Cubs drafted him in the 33rd round in 1969. Described in the press as built like the village blacksmith, he moved from the outfield to first base in 1970 and drove in eight runs in one game for Double-A San Antonio in 1971. He reached the majors on September 6, 1971, pinch-hitting against Pittsburgh's Bob Moose. In 1972 he was the American Association's MVP at Wichita, hitting 20 home runs. Oakland optioned him to Wichita in the spring of 1975, and he refused to report and was released. He signed with the Mexico City Diablos Rojos, won the Mexican League batting title in 1975, played in three Mexican League All-Star Games, and was with the club for its 1976 championship. In 1977 he donated money to keep a Mexico City orphanage open. He left baseball after 1978 and settled in Flagstaff, Arizona.
