1974 Topps #323 Richie Scheinblum

About Richie Scheinblum
Scheinblum opened 1973 with Cincinnati, acquired on December 1, 1972 in a trade with Roger Nelson for Hal McRae and Wayne Simpson. After a slow start he was sent to California, where he hit .328, and he finished at .307 in 106 games. Card #323 in the 1974 Topps set lists him with the Angels. His 1974 season was split among the Angels, Royals and Cardinals, and his final major league game came on September 21.
Richie Scheinblum was a switch-hitting outfielder who spent parts of eight seasons in the majors between 1965 and 1974, playing for the Cleveland Indians, Washington Senators, Kansas City Royals, Cincinnati Reds, California Angels and St. Louis Cardinals. A C.W. Post College graduate, he broke in with Cleveland as a September call-up in 1965 and spent several seasons shuttling between the Indians and their Portland farm club before piecing together a full-time role. His best year came in 1972 with Kansas City, where he hit .300, made the American League All-Star team, and was named the Royals' Player of the Month in August. That September he wore a black armband to honor the Israeli athletes killed at the Munich Olympics. He finished his career with a .263 average, 13 home runs and 127 RBI over 462 games, and later played two seasons in Japan for the Hiroshima Toyo Carp. He was one of a small handful of Jewish players in the majors during his era.
