About this card

Cards #201-208 are the League Leaders subset: the 1973 leaders in batting, home runs, runs batted in, stolen bases, victories, earned run average and strikeouts, and the leading firemen (#208), each card pairing the American League leader with the National League leader.

The story on this card

The 1973 strikeout race is settled on #207, the strikeout board in the 1974 Topps League Leaders run (#201-208). Nolan Ryan, printed with the California Angels, took the American League with 383, one more than Sandy Koufax's old record. That season included no-hitters against Kansas City on May 15 and Detroit on July 15, the second with 17 strikeouts. Tom Seaver, printed with the New York Mets, led the National League with 251 while going 19-10 with a 2.08 ERA, good for his second Cy Young Award, and the Mets clinched the NL East on October 1.

Nolan Ryan was the flame-throwing "Ryan Express," a Mets farmhand who became baseball's all-time strikeout king, setting career records for strikeouts (5,714) and no-hitters (seven) over 27 seasons with the Mets, Angels, Astros and Rangers. Tom Seaver won 311 games and three National League Cy Young Awards across 20 seasons. The Mets' right-hander helped win the 1969 World Series and entered the Hall of Fame in 1992.
