About Royals Field Leaders (Jack McKeon / Charlie Lau / Galen Cisco / Harry Dunlop)
The 1974 Royals slipped to 77-85 and fifth place in the American League West. McKeon's relationship with some players soured late in the year when he demanded hitting coach Charlie Lau be relieved, and Lau was reassigned to the minors for 1975. On #166 McKeon appears with Lau, Galen Cisco and Harry Dunlop under the Kansas City name. Jack McKeon managed in the majors for the Royals, Athletics, Padres, Reds and Marlins, winning the 2003 World Series at age 72. As Padres general manager he earned the name Trader Jack and assembled the 1984 pennant winner.
Midway through 1974, George Brett began an extensive program of work with Lau on keeping his weight back and covering more of the plate with his swing. Brett finished the season batting .282. Lau shared the Royals' 1974 Field Leaders card, #166, with manager Jack McKeon and coaches Galen Cisco and Harry Dunlop. Charley Lau played 11 major league seasons as a catcher and pinch hitter, then coached five American League clubs. His hitting pupils included George Brett, Reggie Jackson, Harold Baines and Ron Kittle.
Steve Busby, whom The Sporting News named its 1973 American League Rookie Pitcher of the Year, credited Royals pitching coach Galen Cisco. "I had been dropping too much on my slider and Galen got on me about throwing more over the top," Busby said. Busby won 22 games for Kansas City in 1974. Cisco shares #166, the Royals manager-and-coaches card, with Jack McKeon, Charlie Lau and Harry Dunlop. Galen Cisco was a right-handed swingman for the Red Sox, Mets and Royals in the 1960s who later spent nearly three decades as a big-league pitching coach, winning back-to-back World Series titles with the 1992-93 Toronto Blue Jays.
Jack McKeon took over the Royals in 1973 with Dunlop on his coaching staff. Topps brought the Kansas City group together on #166 in 1974: McKeon, Charlie Lau, Galen Cisco and Dunlop. Dunlop continued coaching for the Royals through the 1975 season. Harry Dunlop caught Ron Necciai's 27-strikeout no-hitter for Bristol in 1952. He later managed in the minors and coached for 5 major league clubs, including the Royals, Padres and Marlins.
