1974 Topps #548 Sonny Siebert

About Sonny Siebert
Siebert went 7-12 with a 4.06 ERA in 27 games in 1973, a year split between the Red Sox and the Texas Rangers. Texas sent him to St. Louis for Tommy Cruz and cash on October 26, 1973, and his 1974 Topps card, #548, lists him with the Cardinals. He went 8-8 with a 3.84 ERA that season and won a 25-inning game over the Mets on September 11.
Wilfred Charles "Sonny" Siebert was a right-handed pitcher born January 14, 1937, in St. Mary, Missouri. A two-sport star at Missouri, he played basketball for three years and helped the Tigers reach the College World Series final in his one season on the baseball team. The Cleveland Indians signed him as an outfielder in 1958, and a minor-league pitching coach later convinced him to switch to the mound. He debuted for Cleveland in 1964 and threw a no-hitter against the Washington Senators on June 10, 1966. He was selected to two All-Star teams, in 1966 and 1971. Traded to Boston in 1969, he went 16-10 for the Red Sox in 1971 while also hitting six home runs. He closed his career with St. Louis, San Diego, and Oakland, finishing 140-114 with a 3.21 ERA over 12 seasons, and later spent years as a minor and major league pitching coach. He was inducted into the University of Missouri Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004 and the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame in 2017.
