The story on this card
Card #204 in the 1974 Topps League Leaders run, #201-208, covers the 1973 stolen base race. Tommy Harper is printed with the Boston Red Sox and Lou Brock with the St. Louis Cardinals, one leader from each league. Harper led the American League with 54 stolen bases for Boston, up from 25 the year before. He hit .281 with 17 home runs. Brock stole 70 for St. Louis. His 50th steal that August came in his ninth season of 50 or more and broke a record set by Ty Cobb.
Tommy Harper was a fast outfielder who led the American League in stolen bases twice, joined the 30-30 club with Milwaukee in 1970 and made his only All-Star team that year, then stole a club-record 54 bases as Boston's 1973 team MVP. Cardinals outfielder Lou Brock had helped Southern University win an NAIA championship. In the final against Omaha University, he hit a tiebreaking home run and drove in three runs in a 10-2 victory.
