About Don Newhauser

Card #33 shows Newhauser with the Red Sox and is his rookie card. It followed a 1973 in which Boston recalled him from Pawtucket on May 25, after optioning Lynn McGlothen there, and he worked 12 innings without an earned run and allowed four hits. He pitched for Boston on July 7 and July 13, 1974, totaling 3 2/3 innings with a 9.82 ERA, and was optioned to Pawtucket to make room for Juan Beniquez. At Pawtucket he posted a 2.09 ERA in 27 relief games.

Don Newhauser was a right-handed reliever from Miami who pitched in 42 games for the Boston Red Sox between 1972 and 1974. He was a second-round pick in the 1967 draft after Broward Junior College, and he asked to be a relief pitcher from the start of his professional career, a request he explained by saying he spent too many sleepless nights waiting to pitch regularly. Called up in June 1972 when Ken Tatum was sidelined with a sciatic nerve problem, he debuted June 15 at Fenway Park. He finished the year 4-2 with a 2.43 ERA and four saves in 31 games, during a season in which Boston ended a half-game behind Detroit. On July 21 he came in with the bases loaded in the 10th and worked through the 14th against Oakland. Back and appendix problems followed, including spinal surgery in October 1973, and he made nine appearances in 1973 and two in 1974. His major league line was 4-3 with a 2.39 ERA. He finished in the minors with Charleston in 1976, then moved into grocery wholesale sales.
