1974 Topps #84 Rick Wise

About Rick Wise
Wise threw 5 shutouts and struck out 144 batters in 259 innings for St. Louis in 1973. His 1974 Topps cards split his affiliations: #84 carried Boston, while All-Stars card #339 paired him as a Cardinal with Oakland's Jim Hunter. Injury limited Wise's first Boston season to 9 starts and 49 innings.
Rick Wise pitched eighteen major-league seasons for Philadelphia, St. Louis, Boston, Cleveland and San Diego. The right-hander finished with 188 victories, 138 complete games and 30 shutouts. He hit 15 home runs and was a National League All-Star in 1971 and 1973. On June 23, 1971, he no-hit Cincinnati and hit two home runs, driving in three of Philadelphia's four runs. Phillies scout Glenn Elliott had signed him from Portland's Madison High School for $12,000 in 1963. Wise later coached pitchers in affiliated and independent minor-league baseball, including Lancaster from 2005 through 2008, and served as that club's interim manager in 2007. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1987.
