1974 Topps #247 Rick Miller

About Rick Miller
Miller played a near-full season in 1973: 143 games, a .261 average, and career highs of 6 home runs and 43 RBI. He filled in for the injured Reggie Smith and for Dwight Evans during a slump, and his 12 steals ranked second on the club to Tommy Harper's record 54. The Red Sox Yearbook for 1974 said his emergence as a dependable hitter made it possible to trade Smith to St. Louis for pitching help. Card #247 shows him with Boston.
Rick Miller was a left-handed-hitting center fielder who played 15 seasons in the majors, 12 of them with the Boston Red Sox and three with the California Angels (1978-80). A Michigan State product, he won the Big Ten batting title at .429 in 1969 and was Boston's second pick in that year's draft. He made his debut on September 4, 1971, and became known for defense in Fenway Park's center field, winning a Gold Glove with the Angels in 1978. The Red Sox reacquired him with Carney Lansford and Mark Clear for Rick Burleson and Butch Hobson on December 10, 1980. He hit .269 with 1,046 hits and 28 home runs in 1,482 games. In 1983 he went 17-for-36 as a pinch-hitter. He is Carlton Fisk's brother-in-law, and later managed the Nashua Pride and the New Bedford Bay Sox.
