1974 Topps #301 Bob Montgomery

About Bob Montgomery
Montgomery appeared in 88 games in 1974, 79 of them behind the plate, with Tim Blackwell as his backup. He hit .252 with four home runs and 38 RBI as Boston stayed in first place until shortly after Labor Day. Card #301 pictures him with the Red Sox.
Bob Montgomery was a Nashville-born catcher who spent all 10 of his major-league seasons, 1970 through 1979, with the Boston Red Sox, nearly all as the backup behind Carlton Fisk. He signed in 1962 and played outfield and third base at Olean, and Waterloo manager Len Okrie steered him to catcher in 1963 because he lacked the power for a corner spot. He stepped in as the main catcher in 1974 after Fisk's season-ending injury on June 28 and again in 1975 after Fisk broke an arm. He pinch-hit in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series, grounding out to shortstop against Will McEnaney. He finished with a .258 average, 23 home runs and 156 RBI in 387 games. As a result of a grandfather clause, he was the last major leaguer to bat without a helmet. From 1982 to 1995 he was the color commentator on Red Sox television, and he is credited with 11 Emmy Awards.
