1974 Topps #85 Joe Morgan

About Joe Morgan
In 1973, Morgan played 154 games at second base for Cincinnati. His 1974 Reds card was #85, and All-Star card #333 paired him with Minnesota second baseman Rod Carew. During 1974 Morgan batted .293 with 22 home runs and 58 stolen bases. He scored 107 runs and led the National League in on-base percentage.
Joe Morgan played second base through a 22-year major-league career, collecting 2,517 hits, 268 home runs and 689 stolen bases. Born in Bonham, Texas, he moved to Oakland at five and studied business at Oakland City College before Houston signed him in 1962. His 5-foot-7 stature brought him the nickname "Little Joe." Teammate Nellie Fox suggested that he flap his back elbow to keep it raised while batting, a habit Morgan retained throughout his career. With Cincinnati, he won consecutive National League Most Valuable Player awards in 1975 and 1976 and five Gold Gloves from 1973 through 1977. His ninth-inning single drove home Ken Griffey with the winning run in Game Seven of the 1975 World Series. Morgan returned to Houston as a free agent in 1980, then played for San Francisco, Philadelphia and Oakland. He retired in 1984 and began broadcasting Reds games the next year, later working with Jon Miller on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball. Morgan entered the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1990, his first year of eligibility.
