About this card

Cards #331-339 are the nine All-Star cards, each pairing an American League and a National League player at one position, from the catchers (Carlton Fisk and Johnny Bench, #331) to the pitchers (Jim Hunter and Rick Wise, #339). Their backs form a picture of Bobby Bonds, the previous season's All-Star Game MVP.

The story on this card

The pitchers on the 1974 All-Stars subset pair an American Leaguer with a National Leaguer. Jim Hunter, printed with the Oakland Athletics, went 21-5 with a 3.34 ERA in 1973 and went 2-0 in that fall's ALCS and 1-0 in the World Series. Rick Wise, printed with the St. Louis Cardinals, won 16 games in 1973 and was the starting and winning pitcher in the All-Star Game. Wise had been traded before the set appeared. On October 26, 1973, St. Louis sent him and Bernie Carbo to the Boston Red Sox for Reggie Smith and Ken Tatum, so the Cardinals line on the card predates the deal. The card is #339, the last of the All-Stars run, #331-339.

Catfish Hunter won 224 games and five World Series championships with the Athletics and Yankees. The 1974 American League Cy Young winner became a free agent after a contract dispute and entered the Hall of Fame in 1987. Boston right-hander Rick Wise held Cincinnati scoreless in the twelfth inning of Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. He earned the victory when Carlton Fisk homered to lead off the bottom half.
