1974 Topps #32 John Grubb

About John Grubb
Grubb's rookie card, #32, shows him with San Diego and exists in two printings, the common one and a variation reading Washington Nat'l Lea. It followed a 1973 in which he played 113 games, mostly in center field, and finished sixth in National League Rookie of the Year voting, well behind winner Gary Matthews of the Giants.
Johnny Grubb was a left-handed-hitting outfielder who played 16 major league seasons, 1972 to 1987, with the Padres, Indians, Rangers and Tigers. A Richmond, Virginia native, he played at Manatee Junior College and Florida State, whose 1970 team went 49-9 and finished second at the College World Series. San Diego signed him as the 24th pick of the secondary phase in 1971. He debuted September 10, 1972, hit .311 as the Padres' 1973 center fielder and made the 1974 National League All-Star team. After trades to Cleveland and then Texas, he adjusted to the designated hitter role in the American League, and he finished his career in Detroit, where he was a member of the 1984 World Series champions. He retired with a .278 average, 99 home runs and 475 RBI in 1,424 games. In 1986 he hit .333 with 13 home runs for the Tigers.
