1974 Topps #102 Bill Greif

About Bill Greif
Greif made the Padres' Opening Day start in 1974 and worked 226 innings, going 9-19 with a 4.66 ERA. Card #102 comes in two printings. The first reads "Washington Nat'l Lea." under the Padres name, made when owner C. Arnholt Smith seemed set to sell to a Washington grocery magnate; Smith sold to McDonald's founder Ray Kroc instead, and the card was reprinted as San Diego.
Bill Greif was a 6 ft 4 in right-hander from Texas who pitched in the majors from 1971 to 1976 for the Houston Astros, San Diego Padres and St. Louis Cardinals. A third-round pick of the Astros in 1968 out of John H. Reagan High School in Austin, he had signed to play football at the University of Texas before baseball won out. Houston traded him to the Padres in December 1971, and nearly all of his work came in San Diego, mostly as a starter from 1972 through 1974. His best year was 1973, a 3.21 ERA over 199 1/3 innings with nine complete games and three shutouts. He leaned on a hard-thrown knuckle-curve, a knuckleball with the spin removed that he threw at close to fastball speed. He moved to the bullpen in 1975, saved nine games, and was sent to St. Louis in May 1976. His career line was 31-67 with a 4.41 ERA and 19 saves. He finished in the Mets organization with three games for Tidewater in 1978.
