About Dave Roberts

Card #309 turned up in one printing with the team line reading Washington Nat'l Lea., later corrected to San Diego. Behind it was a 1973 that began 1-for-16 over five games and a May 1 demotion to Hawaii, where he hit .375 in 22 games and took third base from Dave Hilton. In 1974 he hit .194 in April without a homer and connected for the first on May 13. Hilton replaced him as starter on July 21, with Roberts at .178, and he finished at .167.

Dave Roberts was a third baseman, second baseman and later backup catcher who played parts of ten seasons between 1972 and 1982 for the San Diego Padres, Texas Rangers, Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. The Padres made the Oregon product the number one pick of the June 1972 draft and signed him the next day. He was in a game that same day, becoming the sixth player to go straight to the majors after being drafted. His best year came in 1973, when he hit .286 with 21 home runs and 64 RBI. He spent all of 1976 in Hawaii and was a reserve in San Diego in 1977 and 1978. After a trade to Texas he played every position but shortstop and pitcher in 1979 and appeared in 101 games in 1980. He finished with Houston in 1981 and Philadelphia in 1982, retiring with a .239 average and 49 home runs. He managed Eugene in the Northwest League in 1984 and coached first base for Cleveland in 1987. The Oregon Sports Hall of Fame inducted him in 1994.
