1974 Topps #241 Glenn Beckert

About Glenn Beckert
Glenn Beckert's last Cubs season, 1973, produced 114 games, a .255 average and 29 RBI. Chicago then sent him and Bobby Fenwick to San Diego for Jerry Morales. Card #241 shows him as a Padre and exists in two printings: the common San Diego version and one reading Washington Nat'l Lea., made while a move to Washington was rumored before Ray Kroc bought the club in January 1974.
Glenn Beckert became the Chicago Cubs' second baseman in 1965, stepping into the job after the sudden death of Ken Hubbs. A Pittsburgh native who played college ball at Allegheny College before the Red Sox signed him and the Cubs drafted him away, Beckert spent nine seasons at the position, playing alongside shortstop Don Kessinger and third baseman Ron Santo. He was a difficult batter to strike out, leading the National League in fewest strikeouts per at-bat five times, and in 1968 he led the league in runs scored and won a Gold Glove. Beckert made four straight All-Star teams from 1969 through 1972, and his best offensive season came in 1971, when he hit .342 to finish third in the batting race. After the 1973 season the Cubs traded him to the San Diego Padres, where he closed out his career as a utility infielder before his release in 1975. He finished with 1,473 hits and a .283 career average over 11 seasons, and he is an inductee of the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1974 Topps #241 card?
It is card #241 of the 660-card 1974 Topps Baseball set, picturing Glenn Beckert of the San Diego Padres.
What are the key cards in the 1974 Topps set?
#1 Hank Aaron: New All-Time Home Run King, #20 Nolan Ryan and #456 Dave Winfield (his rookie card, the headline rookie of the set) are the headline cards. The set's signature variation is #599 1974 Rookie Pitchers, the only card in the set with three printings - one "Washington Nat'l Lea." and two San Diego. Among the Washington cards, PSA names #241 Glenn Beckert and #250 Willie McCovey as its examples. The set was issued all at once and printed in equal quantities, so it has no high-number or short-print run.
Does 1974 Topps #241 have variations?
Yes. Two states are catalogued and tracked individually: 241a - San Diego (Corrected) (The front carries the San Diego team name - the reprint Topps made once the Padres stayed in San Diego, and the common state of the pair) and 241b - Washington Nat'l Lea. (The front names the team "Washington Nat'l Lea." - the first printing, made while the Padres looked set to move to Washington, D.C., and the scarcer state of the pair. PSA's set profile names this card and #250 Willie McCovey as its examples of the Washington cards). Owning any one of them fills the #241 slot; the master set counts each state.

660 cards, tracked as 678 collectible states. Numbers run from 1 to 660 with none skipped, issued all at once as a single series and printed in equal quantities; 17 cards carry catalogued print variations that the master set counts separately - fourteen San Diego / "Washington Nat'l Lea." pairs (thirteen Padres player cards and the #226 team card), the three-state #599 Rookie Pitchers, the #608 Apodaco misspelling and the #654 Jesus Alou front without a position.
