About Nate Colbert

Colbert hit .270 with 22 home runs and 80 RBI in 1973, his third straight All-Star year. Card #125 in the 1974 Topps set exists in two printings, the common San Diego version and a variation reading Washington Nat'l Lea., run while a Padres move to Washington was rumored. In 1974 the arrival of Willie McCovey moved Colbert to left field, and he fell to .207 with 14 home runs.

Nate Colbert was a first baseman and three-time All-Star for San Diego. He signed with his hometown St. Louis Cardinals after graduating from Sumner High School in 1964. His major league career spanned 10 seasons and 1,004 games. He hit .243 with 173 home runs and 520 RBI. His 163 Padres home runs remained the club record until Manny Machado passed him in 2024. After playing, he returned to the Padres as a spring-training instructor and coached for the Riverside Red Wave. An ordained minister, he ran baseball schools and camps for young players. Colbert, Randy Jones and Ray Kroc formed the Padres Hall of Fame's inaugural class in 1999.
