1974 Topps #77 Rich Troedson

About Rich Troedson
Troedson made the Padres out of spring training in 1973, debuted April 9, and made 18 starts in his 50 games, going 7-9. His rookie card, #77 in the 1974 Topps set, turns up in two printings. One carries "Washington Nat'l Lea." as the team name; it is one of fifteen Padres cards Topps produced that way while a move to Washington was pending. After Ray Kroc bought the club in January 1974 and kept it in San Diego, later pressings carried the corrected team name.
Rich Troedson was a left-handed pitcher for the San Diego Padres in 1973 and 1974, going 8-10 with a 4.74 ERA across 65 games. At Santa Clara he made first-team All-WCAC every year, was a second-team All-American as a junior and was named WCC Player of the Year; the Padres took him in the first round in 1972. Assigned to Class A Tri-Cities after the draft, he went 8-5 with a 3.19 ERA. Willie McCovey, caught looking, was his first major-league strikeout, and he named a start that beat the Big Red Machine and a Fourth of July win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles among his proudest moments. His last big-league appearance came May 16, 1974 against the Atlanta Braves, when manager John McNamara pulled him in the second inning after he gave up six runs; he was sent to Triple-A Hawaii. In 1975 he posted a 3.96 ERA at Double-A Alexandria, the Padres let him go afterward, and he pitched his last season in 1976 for the Monterrey Sultanes of the Mexican League. He later owned a sporting goods store for about 10 years and spent the rest of his working life in banking; Santa Clara inducted him into its Athletics Hall of Fame in 1984.
