About Giants Field Leaders (Charlie Fox / John McNamara / Joe Amalfitano / Andy Gilbert / Don McMahon)
Fox's last Giants season ended on June 27, 1974, when Wes Westrum replaced him with the club at 34-42. His #78 pairs him with John McNamara, Joe Amalfitano, Andy Gilbert and Don McMahon, all printed with San Francisco, though McNamara took over as the Padres' manager in 1974. Charlie Fox caught three games for the 1942 New York Giants, then spent decades in the organization as a minor-league manager, scout and coach before managing San Francisco to the 1971 NL West title and later taking charge in Montreal and Chicago.
Just before spring training in 1974 McNamara took over the San Diego Padres, a club Ray Kroc had just rescued from relocation, and the team went 60-102 and finished last in the National League West. The Topps card #78 still shows him in the Giants group with Fox, Amalfitano, Gilbert and McMahon. John McNamara managed six big league clubs between 1969 and 1996, winning the 1986 American League pennant with Boston and a 1979 division title with Cincinnati, after years developing Oakland's future stars in the minors.
Before returning to the Giants as a coach, Amalfitano had coached the Cubs under Leo Durocher, his first manager. San Francisco went 88-74 in 1973 and finished third in the National League West, 11 games behind the Cincinnati Reds. Card #78 is the Giants' manager-and-coaches card, shared with manager Charlie Fox, John McNamara, Andy Gilbert and Don McMahon. Joey Amalfitano was a bonus-baby infielder who spent ten seasons with the Giants, Colt .45s and Cubs, then made a second career in uniform as a coach and manager, including sixteen years coaching third base for the Dodgers.
Gilbert was still on San Francisco's coaching staff in 1974. Juan Marichal, Jim Barr, Dave Rader and Chris Speier were among the players he had managed in the minors. On 1974 Topps #78, Gilbert shared the Giants Field Leaders card with Charlie Fox, John McNamara, Joe Amalfitano and Don McMahon. Red Sox outfielder Andy Gilbert caught President Harry Truman's ceremonial first pitch in Washington in 1946 after a scramble. He then had Truman autograph the ball.
McMahon struck out 20 batters in 30 1/3 innings for San Francisco in 1973. For 1974, Topps included the pitching coach on #78 with manager Charlie Fox and coaches John McNamara, Joe Amalfitano and Andy Gilbert. On May 27 he struck out the Cubs' Don Kessinger for the 1,000th strikeout of his major league career. A Brooklyn-born relief specialist who worked almost entirely out of the bullpen across 18 seasons and seven teams, never going on the disabled list and winning championships with the 1957 Braves and 1968 Tigers.
