About this card

Cards #331-339 are the nine All-Star cards, each pairing an American League and a National League player at one position, from the catchers (Carlton Fisk and Johnny Bench, #331) to the pitchers (Jim Hunter and Rick Wise, #339). Their backs form a picture of Bobby Bonds, the previous season's All-Star Game MVP.

The story on this card

The 1973 All-Star shortstops share #335 in the All-Stars subset (#331-339), one from each league. Bert Campaneris is printed with the Oakland Athletics and Chris Speier with the San Francisco Giants. Campaneris was the American League's starting shortstop that summer, hit .250 with 34 steals, then homered twice against Baltimore in the playoffs and once more in Game 7 of the World Series against the Mets. Speier hit .249 with 11 home runs and 71 RBI and made the National League All-Star team in 1972, 1973 and 1974. The backs of the subset carry no statistics and join as a picture puzzle of Bobby Bonds.

Bert Campaneris was a shortstop and six-time American League stolen-base leader. He spent most of his nineteen major league seasons with the Athletics, collecting 649 steals and 2,249 hits over his career. Chris Speier - Shortstop for 19 seasons with the Giants, Expos, Cubs, Cardinals and Twins, a three-time National League All-Star from 1972 to 1974 who later served as a major league coach.
