About Ron Bryant

Bryant's 1974 began on March 15, when he tumbled off a body slide in spring training, struck the side of a hotel pool and needed 25 stitches in his right side. After an injured-list stay to April 16, he went 3-15 with a 5.61 ERA in 41 games. League Leaders card #205 pairs him with Wilbur Wood of the White Sox, whose 24 wins in 1973 tied his for the most that year. His other card is #104.

Ron Bryant was a left-handed pitcher from Redlands, California, who spent nearly his whole career with the San Francisco Giants, 1967 to 1975, and finished 57-56 with a 4.02 ERA over 917 innings. His peak was 1973, when he won 24 games, led the National League and was named The Sporting News Pitcher of the Year and its All-Star left-hander. Giants equipment manager Mike Murphy gave him the nickname Bear, saying Bryant looked like one with his chunky build, his walk and his curly hair. His request to be placed on the voluntary retired list was granted on April 4, 1975, and he cited a wish to spend more time with his wife and two children. The Giants traded his contract to the St. Louis Cardinals on May 9 for Larry Herndon and minor leaguer Tony Gonzales, and the Cardinals released him on July 30 after he rejected a demotion to Tulsa. The Dodgers cut him in spring training 1976, and he stayed in the organization at Albuquerque until his release on July 13. Bryant died in Boise, Idaho, in 2023.
