1974 Topps #178 Garry Maddox

About Garry Maddox
A salary dispute opened Maddox's 1974: he earned $25,000 in 1973, held out briefly, and signed for $46,000. By June 1 he had put together a 16-game hitting streak while the Giants sat 11 games out of first, but leg and back pain followed. He finished at .284 with 8 home runs. His 2.65 range factor led the league in center field, while San Francisco dropped to 72-90. Card #178 pictures him in San Francisco colors.
Garry Maddox was a center fielder who played 15 seasons, 1972 to 1986, for the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies. He won eight consecutive Gold Gloves from 1975 through 1982, all with Philadelphia, and Daily News columnist Bill Conlin tagged him the Secretary of Defense in 1976. The line that two-thirds of the earth is covered by water and the other third by Garry Maddox became one of baseball's best-known quotes. He hit .285 for his career with 117 home runs and 248 stolen bases. He also collected 337 doubles and 62 triples. Raised in San Pedro, California, he was a second-round pick in 1968, left pro ball for the Army, served a year in Vietnam, and returned in 1970. He replaced Willie Mays in center field at San Francisco in 1972. The Giants traded him to Philadelphia for Willie Montanez on May 4, 1975. He played on the 1980 Phillies team that won the franchise's first World Series, and his tenth-inning double scored the pennant-winning run in Game Five of that year's NLCS. He received the Roberto Clemente Award in 1986 and entered the Phillies Wall of Fame in 2001.
